30s Dancers by Betsy Bear

11"x15" watercolor

This painting was inspired by an old hand-colored photograph of my mother’s ballet class, taken around 1930. I loved the depression era pastel tones and the home-made tutus and bloomers. An icon of the times, a box of Animal Cracker cookies, is being proudly displayed by the young dancer to the right of my mother. The heart motif hints at a Valentine’s recital, and unifies the dancers and they wriggle into their poses on the steps.
